The Good Kind of Pandemic Viral Distractions

While millions of people around the world are trapped at home during the pandemic, creative folks are finding new ways to entertain the masses. Here are some of the funniest and most inspired viral videos, comics, and social media collaborations that have made survival during the pandemic a little easier. Because humanity is pretty hilarious.

  • Vietnam Corona Virus Song: Easily the most addictive song about hand washing to emerge during the pandemic, this earworm from Vietnam (now with English subtitles!) features a charming animated music video and a 20 second chorus just perfect for a thorough hand washing regimen.
  • MessyCow Comics: Weng Chen was profiled by the Washington Post in March as a Wuhan-born artist living in Seattle with a unique perspective on the unfolding pandemic. Her recent comics hilariously depict the trials and tribulations of self-isolation with a husband and kids and the usual hoarding, panic, and stress that comes with being in lock-down. But more funny. View her comics at Messycow.com and follow her on Twitter @messycow.
  • Sidewalk Chalk Art: If you’ve got sidewalk chalk and a driveway, take a cue from Stacey Lazzara and make gorgeous 2D landscapes for your kids to play in. If you can’t get enough of the chalk art craze, artist Jan Riggins (janrigginsart) is cheering up her Fort Worth neighbors with her own spectacular sidewalk art.
  • Tiny Face Makeup Challenge: If you’re looking to combine a new makeup tutorial with a makeover that is sure to keep people 6 feet away, then you need to try Jaime French’s Tiny Face Makeup Challenge on Youtube. I only hope this amazing tutorial leads to a horrifying—and hilarious—new trend.
  • Bin Isolation Outing: The intrepid members of the Bin Isolation Outing public Facebook group have turned taking out the trash into a weekly adventure. Cosplayers, drag queens, Disney princesses, and superheroes—people around the world are having a blast with an otherwise mundane task. We can only hope there won’t be a quarantine by the time Halloween rolls around, but if there is, there will still be plenty of folks dressing up for it.
  • The Longest Days of Our Lives: Former SNL stars Jimmy Fallon, Kristen Wiig, and WIll Ferrell reunite for Chapter 1 of a new quarantine-inspired soap opera that crams more twists and turns (and face slaps) into four minutes than most soaps manage in forty. Chapter 2 ups the ante with Zoom baby drama and special guest star Matthew McConaughey, and Chapter 3 introduces Jake Gyllenhaal, “special” effects, and a cameo…or five.
  • Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration: This ambitious collaboration featuring live and pre-recorded musical segments suffered technical difficulties and delays when it premiered on April 26th, but it’s working just fine now. If you’re a fan of Stephen Sondheim, Broadway musicals, absurdly talented performers, or raising money for a good cause, then this is the musical celebration for you.
  • Into the Woods in Quarantine: And if you can’t get enough of Sondheim (who can??), Max Grossman has shared a delightful Zoom rendition of the Into the Woods Prologue. Support these talented performers with a donation to the Actors Fund. Maybe we can talk them into producing the rest of the show?
